About Preferences

Some settings that affect the way you work are saved with your document, and others are saved in the Preferences folder in your home folder.

When settings are saved with a document, they are saved in a Document Style, too. Therefore, if you want to change the default behavior of those settings, you change them in your Document Styles. When settings are saved in your Preferences folder, you change them using the Preferences window.

The following settings are saved in every document:

  • Check spelling while typing
  • Unit of measure
  • Show layout guides
  • Show print guides
  • Show ruler
  • Smart quotes
  • Smart insert and delete
  • View layout, including zoom level

In addition to the settings shown in the Preferences window, the following settings are saved in your Preferences folder:

  • The document toolbar settings
  • The Sidebar settings

To show the Preferences window:

  • From the Pagehand menu, choose Preferences...
  • —OR—
  • Type command-comma.
