About Margins

When you think about margins, you probably think about the margins of the main text area on a page. You might expect to use a Page Margins setting to control the area where text appears.

Pagehand handles margins differently than other word processors. Pagehand does not use page margins. Instead, Pagehand allows you to specify the margin for each text element: a column layout, header, footer, etc. Margins are always measured from the edge of the page.

In a simple document, you typically have one section, which contains one column layout, which in turn contains one column. In addition, the section might have a header and a footer. You control the position of each of those text elements by adjusting its margin. Again, margins are relative to the edge of the page, so there is no need for page margins.

To set the area where the main text content appears, you set the margin of the column layout.

To set the margins of a column layout:

  • 1. Fly in the Columns Toolbar by choosing Columns from the Format menu.
  • 2. In the first popup menu, choose this layout.
  • 3. Using the choices in the second popup menu, set the margins as desired.

The position of headers and footers can be different for each section.

To set the margins of a header or footer:

  • 1. Fly in the Sections Toolbar by choosing Section from the Format menu, or by clicking in the header or footer.
  • 2. In the first popup menu, choose the page header or the page footer.
  • 3. Using the choices in the second popup menu, set the margins as desired.
